There are dozens of Google Business Profile checklists online. Most of them list 25+ items, half of which don't move the needle. This list is different. These are the 10 specific optimizations I've seen consistently improve local rankings — ranked by impact.

1. Primary category accuracy — This is the single highest-leverage setting in your GBP. If your primary category is wrong, nothing else matters. A restaurant should not be 'Food & Beverage.' A dentist should not be 'Health.' Google's category system has hundreds of specific options. Finding the exact one for your business is worth hours of other optimization work.

2. Secondary categories as keywords — You get up to 10 secondary categories. Each one is a separate keyword you can rank for. A dental clinic with 'Dentist' as primary and 'Cosmetic Dentist,' 'Emergency Dental,' 'Teeth Whitening,' and 'Dental Implants' as secondary is ranking for 5 different search types. Most businesses use 2-3 and leave opportunities on the table.

3. Photo quantity + recency — Businesses with 100+ photos get 500% more views. But quantity alone isn't enough. Google tracks photo upload dates. A profile with 100 photos all uploaded in 2022 signals an abandoned profile. Upload new photos every 2-3 weeks — even if it's just one phone photo of your workspace.

4. Review response quality — Responding to reviews is table stakes. But generic 'thank you' responses don't add much. Specific responses that mention what the customer appreciated, use natural language, and include relevant keywords send stronger engagement signals. Google reads these responses.

5. Product/service listings with pricing — GBP now lets you list individual services with prices. This is the most underutilized feature I see. A plumber listing 'Drain Cleaning — $150' and 'Water Heater Repair — Call for Quote' creates more searchable content than 10 blog posts. Every service is a search query waiting to be matched.

6. Q&A seeding — Google lets anyone ask questions on your GBP. If you don't pre-seed common questions and answers, random users and competitors will, and you might not like their answers. I seed 8-10 questions per client with detailed answers that include relevant keywords.

7. GBP posts — Profiles that post weekly get significantly more engagement than those that don't. Offers, events, updates, seasonal tips — each post is fresh content Google indexes. But the key is consistency: one post per week for 12 weeks is worth more than 12 posts in one day.

8. Attributes — Google offers hundreds of business attributes: 'Free Wi-Fi,' 'Wheelchair Accessible,' 'Outdoor Seating,' 'Free Parking.' Each attribute you enable is a filter in Google Maps searches. Missing an attribute means customers filtering for it won't see you.

9. Service area settings — If you're a service-area business (plumber, electrician, cleaner), your GBP service area setting is critical. Set it too wide and Google won't trust your relevance. Set it too narrow and you miss opportunities. I typically recommend a 15-20 km radius for most service businesses.

10. The one most businesses miss — Booking integration. If you use a booking system (Calendly, Cal.com, Booksy), connect it to your GBP. The 'Book Online' button appears directly in your knowledge panel. It's the shortest path from search to conversion and most businesses never enable it.

Go through these 10 in order. Fixing #1 alone has more impact than items 5-10 combined. If you want me to run through them with you on a call, that's what the free consultation is for — I'll check each one live and tell you exactly where your profile is leaving rankings on the table.
